Our Origins

From Carpenter to Anaerobic Cover Installer

Before MidAmerica Liner was established, founder Mark Burns was a carpenter. He built houses, apartments, and commercial buildings for years honing is skills as a builder. When the economy turned, Mark was determined to find other opportunities in the construction industry.

One day, an advertisement in the local newspaper caught Mark’s attention. A construction company sought laborers available to travel the country and install liners. Mark contacted the company and began working on containment system installations in the field.

He picked up the technical skills needed to work with liner in no time, aided by his carpentry experience and ability to solve problems quickly. Soon, Mark was supervising a team, installing landfill, and wastewater lagoon liners.

About four years into his career, he took over a project from another geosynthetic installation company that was hired to install an anaerobic cover at a municipal wastewater facility. Mark didn’t know what he’d find. When he arrived on the site, he knew he needed to deconstruct what was on the lagoon and start from scratch.

At the time, Mark had never worked with anaerobic covers. He pulled from his previous experiences with liners to complete the project successfully. After several months, he finished the project, and the customer was happy. That moment sparked Mark’s interest in anaerobic covers.

His growing interest turned into a business. In 2008, Mark founded MidAmerica Liner in Springfield, MO, to design and install anaerobic covers.

“Covers were new to me and provided a challenge I had never experienced before. I had to think about how the cover would be installed. Understanding the sequence, the technique, all while keeping the quality of construction at its peak. Early on, it was hard, but that’s why I liked it. It challenged me in a way that solidified my interest in anaerobic cover installations.”
